When you are called by God to follow a leader, it is a call to serve. Very importantly, we must understand that the way God works is not the way man works, and of course this is based on the thinking pattern.
God shows us that He has a higher thought process and ways through the writings of the Prophet Isaiah – (Isaiah 55:8).
The call to follow a man is for you to serve that man so as to accomplish the purposes of God. For example, the disciples had this pattern of relationship with Jesus. Most times, aside from sending them out to preach and cast out devils (Luke 9:2, Mark 3:14), he also sent them to do seemingly menial things like: gathering the fragments of fish /bread leftovers (John6:12), buying of food for him (John 4:6-8), getting a donkey for him to ride on (Luke 19:30). It is important to understand that this were “nonspiritual” task, but they had spiritual implications because their attitude in these menial tasks would reveal a lot about their heart.
What do you think the wife of Peter would have thought when he returned and talked about how he went to buy food for Jesus, or what do you think the sons of Zebedee family would think of them leaving their fathers thriving fishing business to gather fragments, or buy food etc.
When God calls you to follow a leader, you must close your ears to certain discussions that would make it seem like you are not fulfilling your potential or doing things below your “standard”. Although these things look menial, the foundation for God’s church was being laid by Jesus Himself and this was also the process of character formation.
